    Get PDF

For hospitals, the variability on demand (number of daily urgent admissions) and the variability in the Length of Stay (LoS) (bed occupancy) may affect the quality of service provided to patients and the effectiveness of the overall service. This paper studies the LoS of 238 patients who performed hip surgery in the orthopedic service of a Portuguese hospital in 2014. It uses variables available in electronic databases, such as Age, Gender, ASA classification; Surgical Apgar Score, Type of hip surgery; Weekday of the surgery; Starting hour of the surgery and Duration of surgery to predict LoS and provides a model that correctly indicate if a patient stays more than 7 days in 72.1% of the cases.- This work has been supported by COMPETE: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007043 and FCT - Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2013.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

East Timor is a young country, post-conflict and with low incomes, it is pointed out the need to implement a strategy in order to bring prosperity. One way to achieve these aspirations may pass through private sector investment through the creation and implementation of industry in the country. The present project intends to define a set of guidelines for the implementation of an industrial unit in East Timor. With the goal of identifying industrial areas most relevant to East Timor and taking as a starting point the case study of Timorese reality, a survey was held with Timorese population and information was collected with governmental entities as well with some industry. Results suggest that respondents recognize the importance of creating a manufacturing industry. Nevertheless the perceived advantages of employment and development, the respondents have concerns with environment and land conflicts with community. The coconut oil industry is considered the most important food industry, followed by the salt industry and the industries for the use of cork (baked). Cement industry is the most important construction materials’ industry. The results presented are an important insight in terms of the expectations and attitudes of East Timor population concerning the establishment of manufacturing industry

    Get PDF
Entrepreneurship has been recognized as a critical factor in promoting innovation, productivity, creating employment opportunities and economic development of a country. In the current environment it is important for a young country like East Timor to promote entrepreneurship as a key opportunity, in order to increase the number of individuals with individual initiative, i.e. entrepreneurs who take responsibility for economic development and job creation for the working population. The present study aims to understand the attitudes and values of the East Timorese students in relation to entrepreneurship. Taking as a starting point a survey set to study the potential of entrepreneurship among university students in East Timor, the paper presents and discusses the results obtained on various issues such as entrepreneurial intention, predisposition, risk disposition, and personality traits and skills. Our sample involves 140 students from National University of East Timor. The students report good entrepreneurial intentions, good levels of risk disposition, and high levels of self-efficacy, endurance and autonomy. They also report good perceived levels of technical skills but admitted lower perceived financial skills. Several differences were identified concerning students’ gender, course or having self-employed parents. The study indicated a high entrepreneur potential among East Timorese university students

Innovation network in the Portuguese textile and clothing industry

    Get PDF
Innovating consists on doing something different or developing new input aggregations, with the goal of achieving a better solution than the current one. The ability to create new knowledge depends on the exploration of complementary skills, which might be internal or external to the operation, reflecting the changes that the organizations have been making in their management style and their relations with other economic agents. Successful innovation results from an interactive learning process between users and producers, between competitors, customers or suppliers and other knowledge and training institutions, such as universities and higher education institutions, or R&D centers. This research aims to contribute to the theme of innovation networks in the Textile and Clothing Industry (TCI) of Portuguese companies by exploring who are the different partners of the existing innovation networks in the Portuguese TCI. A survey with 86 companies suggests that Portuguese TCI companies are preferentially focused on product innovations and process innovations, with customers and suppliers as preferred partners. Therefore, vertical cooperation with suppliers and customers plays a greater role in business innovation of Portuguese TCI companies compared to horizontal cooperation with research centers, universities and technological centers.- This work has been supported by COMPETE: POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007043 and FCT - Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2013

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

Self-efficacy, mathematics’ anxiety and perceived importance: an empirical study with Portuguese engineering students

    Get PDF
The accomplishment in mathematics has gained attention from educators and arises as an emerging field of study, including in engineering education. However, in Portugal, there is still incipient research in the area; so it is high time to explore factors that might enlighten the gap in the study of the relationship between Portuguese engineering students and the learning of mathematics. The main purpose of this study is to explore three factors identified in the literature as influencing the learning of mathematical concepts – self-efficacy, anxiety towards mathematics and perceived importance of mathematics – and search for differences by gender and by type of engineering course, a dimension not much reported in the literature but which was revealed as important in the team’s previous research. Based on a sample of 140 undergraduate students of different engineering courses from University of Minho, results only identify differences in the type of course and not in gender. These results constitute a contribution and open new paths for future research in the engineering education.FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, Portugal) in the scope of the project PEst-OE/EEI/UI0319/201

Success in the learning of Mathematics in higher education constitutes an emerging field of research, particularly in the Engineering courses. In Portugal, however, the research in this area remains incipient. It is therefore relevant to explore which factors may clarify the relation between the Engineering students and Mathematics. Based on three focus groups carried out with students from two Engineering courses at the University of Minho, this exploratory study aims to investigate the attitudes of students in the learning of mathematical concepts and find out the factors that influence their experience in the learning process. Beyond the perception of the importance of Mathematics in their course and their future profession, the results suggest that there are factors that influence their performance, such as the teacher's role and his/her teaching methodology, as well as the applicability of mathematical concepts in the context of Engineering, the student’s active role in learning and the influence of parents and society.
